A complete Tripwire system consists of two components: Tripwire for Servers, which is an agent that must be installed on all servers that are to be protected; and Tripwire Manager, which provides central management for any number of Tripwire for Servers agents. Communications between server agents and management workstation are secured using the secure sockets layer (SSL) protocol.

Applock/Web works for web servers based on Microsoft IIS running on Windows NT/2000. It locks down both operating system and web server application. It auto-discovers which files are associated with web server functions (this may include web content and web scripts) and locks them down. It works within the operating system at the kernel level.

When considering security in any area, be it IT, ATMs or even opening your own front door, there is always one weak spot: it has to involve people. Despite all the research, we are years away from being able to recognize a person's identity with 100 per cent certainty (even if using finger-printing, retinal scanning or DNA testing) in real time.
Unfortunately, the drive to encourage remote working means that more and more people need access to the corporate network, with all of the security risks that that entails: how can you be sure who the person is on the other end? One solution - or rather, preventative measure - is to simply publish only necessary information on an extranet, but even then, this can still be confidential data and a risky business.

Oblix NetPoint is described as an identity management solution for the enterprise. What this means is that it is designed to manage the multiple identities and permissions in a modern e-business environment where you must provide access to a huge variety of different people - many of whom will be entering the network from outside the corporate firewall. In a modern large e-business enterprise it can be a daunting task to do this securely.
Oblix NetPoint simplifies the management of user identities and permissions across multiple applications and provides single sign-on. It makes it easy to add or remove users, to change permissions, and to enforce password rules.

NetScreen uses multi-method detection (MMD) in its IDS appliance, which also includes intrusion prevention options. MMD integrates stateful signature analysis with the detection of protocol anomalies, traffic anomalies, IP spoofing, layer 2 and SYN-flood attacks. Plus, it includes detection of 'backdoor' exploits and a network honeypot. The NetScreen IDP-100 is rated at 200Mbits/sec throughput, offering a choice of eight Fast Ethernet or two separate gigabit monitoring ports.

Policy enforcement is only as good as your management system allows, so a serious vulnerability could go unnoticed without prior knowledge of the problem.

Security Expressions allows deployment using no-agent technology to ensure that, once installed on either Windows NT or 2000 systems, the administrator can add machines within a group, that are required to adhere to the policies that pertain to that group.

Remember the halcyon days of the dot-com boom, when analysts were insisting that no company worth its salt could continue in business unless they had a web presence? Their weighted words were sufficiently terrifying to ensure that businesses rushed to add that all-important 'e' to their trading, resulting in countless new web sites appearing.

Sophos AntiVirus allows you to either install it on each workstation or deliver it from the server. You can designate a PC as your server, but it will only be able to administer 10 PCs in a workgroup and therefore each time you require multiple installations a new 'server' must be assigned for the new workgroup. This means it is ideal for the smaller business model, but although scaleable may not prove ideal for the larger SME.
