The past several weeks have brought a lot of press talk about the Great SNMP Crisis.

This software is very much aimed at the auditing and information security industry and those that work within that field. It is basically a tool to audit information security in an automated fashion.

GFI LANguard System Integrity Monitor (SIM) detects whether files have been changed on a Windows 2000/XP system. It identifies exactly which files have been changed, making it easy to restore the system to its original state, although it does not provide any utility for automatic recovery - you have to have secured original copies of these files elsewhere.

Applock/Web works for web servers based on Microsoft IIS running on Windows NT/2000. It locks down both operating system and web server application. It auto-discovers which files are associated with web server functions (this may include web content and web scripts) and locks them down. It works within the operating system at the kernel level.

iInventory is the latest version of LANauditor, which was launched back in 1990. This package can audit not only Windows-based PCs but also Macs and Linux systems. However the console that runs the whole show must be installed under Windows. The vendors recommend installing the software on a workstation instead of a server as it is claimed it is more secure, offers greater data throughput and clients do not need to access any part of the main program or data.

F-Secure's offering includes several components: a Policy Manager (the hub of the suite), an Anti-Virus Management Wizard and the Policy Manager Reporting Option.

This is one for the serious business with a need for high availability and disaster recovery in its overall plan. The capability not only to replicate files but also only the part that has changed, is just one of Double-Take's virtues.

This is a solution designed for the SME market. (We reviewed version 6, but 6.5 is now available.) Instead of simply making incremental backups Retrospect Backup uses backup sets to ensure all data can be recovered. Whereas many solutions only copy the new or changed part of a file, Retrospect keeps a set of all changed data so that if you later find that the version you have been working on has errors in it you can call back the 'best' version. Saved to your hard drive as well as to the server, a user can quickly call up and restore the version that they need to refer back to.

We looked at version 3.0 of this product in the virtual private network Group Test last year, and it is good to see it being evaluated as a firewall this time around. Astaro might not be a familiar name to most people, but it deserves to be if it continues to produce products such as this.

Back in the world of software, we have Microsoft's entry in the firewall market. Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA Server) is a fully-featured firewall with a number of bells and whistles that add considerable functionality and security.

For the larger SME that requires server protection which also covers workstations throughout an organization, eTrust AntiVirus can be called upon.

The problem of recovering accidentally deleted files was solved largely by the implementation of the recycle bin in Windows - allowing users simply to select 'Restore' from the right-click menu. However, there are a number of users that will, without thinking about what they are doing, automatically empty the recycle bin or even use a utility that does it for them at the end of each session. In addition to this, some viruses delete files, bypassing the safety-net of the recycle bin and of course, some malicious users will deliberately remove certain files. In response to this, O&O Software GmbH has written O&O UnErase which provides the user with a means of recovering such files.

Cobion's OrangeBox Web is a very similar product to DynaComm i:filter. Designed to integrate with a proxy server (for example, Microsoft ISA on Windows 2000/XP), it is also happy to sit on a number of popular Linux and Unix platforms. It can also be used as a proxy server in its own right if you have a small or medium-sized intranet network.

OfficeScan gives the administrator some real choices when it comes to network deployment, from centralized roll out to imaging, remote installation and an uninstall of other anti-virus products to facilitate an OfficeScan install. These are not options that many of the other solutions are offering, and for the larger SME or it may prove a real boon.

Sophos AntiVirus allows you to either install it on each workstation or deliver it from the server. You can designate a PC as your server, but it will only be able to administer 10 PCs in a workgroup and therefore each time you require multiple installations a new 'server' must be assigned for the new workgroup. This means it is ideal for the smaller business model, but although scaleable may not prove ideal for the larger SME.

This solution is probably more suited to the smaller business model as it requires separate installation at every workstation, unless you utilize the separate deployment console BitDefender Enterprise. This allows the installation, scanning, uninstall or the change of settings on all machines in the network. It can also be deployed across the larger network using wireless application protocol (WAP).

NOD32 can be initiated for server or workstation use, making it very flexible for the SME market. The range of features is also good. Automatic updates are provided, and it also offers updates via CD or floppy disk for non-networked machines. Central configuration can be rolled out to workstations and a silent alert can be achieved for admin use.
