For: Full-scale fingerprint scanning and single sign-on that integrates perfectly across the enterprise. Against: None that we found. Verdict: This one was our favorite. With solid performance, self-enrollment and a full range of AD schema extensions, DigitalPersona Pro continues to be a solid performer. We rate it our Best Buy.

DigitalPersona Pro was designed for bringing biometric fingerprint scanning into the large-scale enterprise.

This product includes all a company would need to deploy biometrics throughout its environment with little trouble or interruption.

This hardware and software package brings together workstation logon with many other single sign-on options in everything from web applications to remote access applications, such as Citrix.

This offering is about as plug-and-play as it gets. To install the server we simply ran the server installation wizard and imported the DigitalPersona templates into our Windows Domain Group Policy.

The clients could be installed either through physically touching the workstations or being deployed via group policy and then installing the readers.

After installation is complete, enrollment can be done by users themselves, without the need for administrator interaction, through the simple enrollment wizard.

We found this product to perform as if it were a part of the initial environment. By plugging directly into Active Directory and Group Policy it behaves perfectly alongside of a Microsoft domain.

We found policy templates to be quick and easy to deploy and there was no extra software to learn as all administration is done directly in Microsoft Management Console.

Documentation provided with DigitalPersona Pro consists of a small quick-start guide and a PDF administrator guide. The quick-start guide gives a brief overview of using the product and enrollment from the user perspective, whereas the administrator guide provides a great amount of detail on product features and configuration.

DigitalPersona offers two-tiered maintenance and support at 15 to 20 percent of the cost of the product, which includes phone and email technical support. There is also a support area on the vendor's website.

At US$70 per user for the complete package of hardware and software, this product can become quite pricey in large-scale environments. However, we do find it to be a good value for money based on the complete package of ease of deployment and full integration ability.
