For: Broad feature set with many bells and whistles. Against: Can become expensive with extra cost, such as hardware and support. Verdict: Lots of features on this one, but they come at a price as one would expect. Needs better documentation.

This software features protection against spam, phishing, viruses and other malware, as well as data leakage prevention and compliance policy, which can protect sensitive data from leaving the enterprise.

This product has the ability to scan for pornographic email content and images and also includes the power of a few third-party anti-virus engines, including Sophos, McAfee and Norman, with spyware protection from CounterSpy and CA (with technology acquired in the company’s acquisition of PestPatrol).

We found this tool fairly easy to work with. Installation requires many prerequisites. However, the software helped us locate and download everything we needed. After the prerequisites are installed, the actual installation begins. This is guided by a setup wizard.

Finally, after the installation is complete, management is done through a console snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC). We found this snap-in to be nicely organised and quite simple to use.

At installation, this product includes many pre-defined policies, which give a good head start to configuration. Further policy customisation is done using the MailMarshal Configurator, another MMC snap-in.

MailMarshal SMTP comes with several PDF guides and manuals, including some quick reference materials and sizing guides. Install through detailed configurations can be found easily in this single PDF. However, the guide has no visuals or diagrams, which makes certain parts hard to follow.

Marshal offers a customer self-support knowledge base at no cost. Further support options require extra cost. These options include email and phone support, customer forums, product upgrades, patches and feature packs. Two levels of support are offered: Essential Care at 25 percent of the software license fee, and Premium Care at 30 percent.

At a price starting at US$45 per user for 25 users and going down to US$23.75 for 250-450 users, this product is an average value for the money. While it does include some very nice features, it does require the purchase of extra hardware and little free support is offered.
