For: Flexible product that can work with many LDAP and database servers already in the environment
Against: A slightly confusing GUI
Verdict: A solid product with a lot of flexibility for organisations with authentication measures already in place

This device provides a way not only to manage wired authentication, but also wireless network access. The most interesting of the features is the ability for a client to be authenticated before receiving a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) assigned address.

This assures that no machine gets on the network without a properly authenticated user. On the other side, this appliance can also resolve IP addresses to user ID. This allows for a much more efficient way of finding and fixing security issues on the network.

We found this product to be fairly simple to use. The initial setup takes just a few seconds and is done through a command line interface (CLI). Once the admin password is changed and the IP address set, the rest of setup is done through the web GUI. This GUI is a little overwhelming at first as all the main features are displayed in tabs along the side. Once clicked they open up a menu with tabs across the top.

With the ability to integrate itself with almost any database, including existing RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service), Active Directory and SQL servers, this product can make managing user identities across the network much more efficient. This product provides central account management with all lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP), and servers in the environment, and it simplifies provisioning and password policy.

Documentation for this product is provided on a CD containing several PDF manuals. All the manuals are organised and hyperlinked on a single front page. Some of the documents include an installation and setup guide, CLI manual, and a graphical user interface (GUI) manual.

Support for this product is offered in several levels and support programs. All support programs offer technical support by phone, email and web.

At a price of almost US$20,000 to start, we find this product to be an excellent value for the money. Its ability to integrate with many devices and to streamline user identity management is alone worth the cost of the product.
