The software is designed to block unauthorised use of remote connection tools, such as Radmin.

It is also intended to stop staff accessing work computers from external locations, according to Sophos.

The update prevents company workers connecting to Instant Messaging software, computer games, peer-to-peer (P2P), VoIP and other distributed applications while on the corporate network, the security software firm said.

"While remote connection tools can certainly make life easier for those employees who need to work from the office, from home and while on the road, their use can be a security nightmare for systems administrators," said John Stringer, product manager at Sophos, in a statement.

The updated application control features are available now free of charge to Sophos customers.
