Jeffrey B. Goodin, 45, of California faces more than 100 years in jail for perpetrating a phishing scheme that targeted users of the giant internet service provider, according to a statement from the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

Goodin urged AOL members to update their personal information on a fraudulent website, threatening them with loss of service, according to a DOJ statement.

Once redirected to the fake site, users were asked to provide names, addresses, AOL account information, and credit or debit card data.

Consumers lost about US$1 million to the scheme, according to press reports.

Goodin is scheduled to be sentenced 11 June in a Los Angeles court, according to reports.
