IBM is set to release its latest version of its Informix Dynamic Server database, code-named 'Cheetah 2', which it claims can cut data management costs by a third.

The deluge of data produced by today's global enterprise catapulted data management up the boardroom agenda, said Inhi Cho, vice president, data management marketing, IBM.

"The new version of IDS delivers the speed, agility and efficiency to help our clients enhance their overall business performance and reduce costs as their companies grow," he said in a statement.

The upgraded IDS, version 11.5 can deliver low-cost continuous data availability across clustered data centres. It can be configured to give high availability using commodity hardware set up as a cluster, and automatic workload balancing to optimise network connections to additional servers wherever they are located.

IBM have also improved the system admin tools within IDS and included new or updated drivers for application development environments such as PHP, Ruby and .Net.

Cheetah 2 will start shipping on 6 May, and will be offered in three versions: IDS Enterprise, Workgroup and Express.
